The global phenomenon The Vagina Monologues by Eve Ensler returns to Singapore with its first-ever all-Singaporean cast. Ensler has given a voice to a chorus of lusty, outrageous, brave, highly original and thoroughly human stories and shows that by opening up such a subject, you can also reveal a whole range of human emotions, intelligence and compassion. It is hugely funny, warm and still morally serious. The special women, selected from an audition held on 28 August, join a unique sisterhood of actresses such as Jane Fonda, Susan Sarandon, Meryl Streep, Calista Flockhart who have all taken on roles in productions of The Vagina Monologues in the US.The play is based on hundreds of interviews done by American playwright Eve Ensler with everyday women where they were asked to talk about the most secret part of their bodies. Distilled into a series of monologues covering issues from sexual abuse, first sexual experiences, the indignities of pelvic examinations, women's dreams, orgasms and sex, the play combines drama and comedy and is a sell-out all over the world.The Vagina Monologues is produced by The New Voice Company and The Arts House in the historic Old Parliament House where the Women¹s Charter was passed in 1961.The Singapore production is supported by Singapore Council of Women's Organisations (SCWO), United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) and AWARE(Association of women for Action and Research).
